Pep Boys Fail

So yesterday after work I decided to go get the cars tire fixed. I didn’t want to drive on the space saver spare any more then totally necessary. I figured since it was really close I would just go up to the local Pep Boys. Yeah that was my first mistake. I checked in and told them I just needed the tire fixed and might as well get the oil changed while they were at it. I was told to go wait in the waiting area…and I waited….and waited…and waited…. I gave them my key at 3:50pm. Finally around 6:30 I went to inquire as to my cars status. First the guy couldn’t find my paperwork and then said oh its done. Proceded to start processing the paperwork and hand me my keys….which weren’t my keys. He looked though more stuff and turns out no one has even looked at my car yet.

So I wen’t back and waited…and waited…and waited….about 45 minutes later he calls me over and says I am all set. Processes “my” paperwork and says the total is 72$. Now when I checked in they gave me the invoice and I SHOULD of remembered that it was a bit lower then 72$ but by that point I just wanted to get the hell out of there so I ran my card and he gave me my receipt and keys…which….yeah were neither MY receipt or keys. <HEAD DESK>

SO….I have to get the charge taken off by the Mgr. and then go back…and yes…wait…and wait…and wait. FINALLY at like 8 my car is done. Which again is just there to fix a flat tire and change the oil. The only saving grace was that the service Mgr. took the charge for fixing the tire off the bill and gave me 10% off on the oil change. But still…it was a REALLY long day. It probably wouldn’t of been SO bad but I had been up since like 5:30 and worked 7-3 before heading over so it was just a LONG day and by that point I was really HUNGRY. We really didn’t have any dinner plans and by that point would of taken a while to make anything, but after I left the Pep Boys I saw a Boston Marked just a block up the road so brought home a chicken feast for Meg and I to share.

Needless to say today I pretty much took it easy other then food shopping and making a darn tasty Vegetable Soup for dinner (with fruit salad still waiting us for desert)

Cosmopolitan…WTF?

This morning I came across a few pics on one of my co-workers Flickr page of a March 2010 Cosmopolitan magazine article titled “Inside a CSI Murder”. Its a mostly sensational/fluff piece on the Michelle Lee case (she was the Criminalist who worked at the lab and was killed last year). I guess with all the popularity of forensics and ‘CSI’ its not unexpected for the story to pop up here and there, I can only imagine what it’s going to be like when the trial of her alleged killer finally starts.

I found a copy on bittorrent so I could see the story. What is really odd is that the story is in Cosmopolitan magazine. So you have a story about the brutal murder of a young woman in the same issue as “How to touch a naked man”, “Curb Your Cravings! Without feeding your face”, and “Fashion:7 Items You’ll Wear the Hell out of”……uh really?

Who though that was a good idea and who approved said idea in the editorial room? The article it self is really unimpressive in my opinion. It’s really just a re-tread of stuff that already appeared in the papers last year, mixed in with questions to their forensic experts as to their thoughts on the case (with random forensic info graphics mixed in on blood splatter and fiber comparison).

All in all a truly bizarre reading experience.

Valentine’s day weekend

Well the original plan for this weekend was to go up to CT and spend it at my parents doing various Connecticut/Mass things. BUT….the snow storm and more importantly a flat tire put the breaks on those plans. Which is for the best I suppose, CT will be a nicer visit when it warms up a bit and there is a little less snow on the ground.

The stupid car is a mess right now. Meg found the tire flat on Tuesday, the night before the snow storm, and when I got home I was able to jack up the car and take the lug nuts off but the tire it self refused to budge. After an hour or so of trying and cursing I gave up and just left it parked where it was, with the snow coming wasn’t like we would be driving it any time soon anyway. Finally today I went back out there, was able to move it to the other side of the street, getting stuck in the snow and making the tire worse in the process. Again got it jacked up and tried banging on it with a big mallet a borrowed but again no luck. Looks like I will be calling a tow truck tomorrow and have it taken to my garage to see if they can be of any help. I imagine one its up on the lift it would be much easier to deal with getting the tire off, the fact I have to kneel in a pile of snow and slush I am sure didn’t make the project much easier. Not exactly how I wanted to spend my day off but oh well.

At least we got to have fun on my Friday off. Went down to the Museum of Natural History for a visit and had a really fun time. Took a bunch of pictures which are up on flickr:

Meg brought her sketch book and drew some of the animals in the dioramas. Place wasn’t too crowded, though there were a few school groups with annoying children who just ran around the place yelling. Seriously….thats why they need capital er…corporal punishment back in the schools. God knows I wanted to smack a few of them. We ended up doing lunch at the museum too. Were about to go though the main food area when all of a sudden a school group of like 80 kids showed up. We put down our trays and escaped. Ended up eating at their smaller caffe which is more….er upscale I guess. Was much nicer and they had wine :)
No major plans for Valentine’s Day. Even if the car wasn’t out of commission we really don’t make that big a deal of it. Going to take it easy the rest of today, and then tonight make Meg one of her favorite dinners with some sparkling wine and strawberries for desert.

Nothing too post worthy as of late, plus I am lazy. It’s easier to think of 140 characters worth of something to say on Twitter then to have to come up with entire sentences to write here.

Guess the big news is that my sister Chelsea got engaged this past Friday to her BF Brett. I already asked them how many Elvises will be at the wedding. I will be happy as long as the number is larger than 0 :)

We are looking forward to the season premiere of LOST tomorrow night. We may be bad and celebrate with some Ben and Jerry’s Mmmmm.

After Christmas

Christmas is over. We had a nice time the last few days spending the holiday up in CT with my family. I took Christmas Eve off so and we loaded up the car with gifts and the cat and drove up after work on Wednesday. Christmas Eve it self we ran out and did a little last minute shopping before coming back home and having a snack and alcohol filled x-mas eve. My sister and her BF had brought rock band and Beatles rock band for Wii and we had a good time playing that. Later we watched the traditional Muppets Christmas Carol. Later that night we ended up going out to midnight mass.

Christmas morning was nice. Everyone gathered around the tree opening gifts. I got some neat stuff (Monkey wall calendar and dinosaur coffee mug where they turn into dinosaur skeletons when you add hot stuff) My sister got Meg and I “his and her” towels with the “his and hers” denoted on the towels by XY and XX. Awesome! Last night we ran out to the movies to see Sherlock Holmes. Was nice mindless entertainment.

No real plans for today. We may brave the mall, we have a Williams Sanoma gift card to use and the after Christmas sales may make it worth going. Plus we really don’t have much else to do today.

Trip to the city.

Given we didn’t have any plans yesterday I was able to talk Meg into a trip into the city. We hit the Union Square Holiday market which has grown quite a bit since last year. Had quite a few interesting booths but nothing we had to have. I did get a hot cider and really good cider doughnuts. Meg was most excited when she got to feed a squirrel a piece of doughnut and it ate it right out of her hand. It was really cute how excited she was after and totally made the day of the lady that was sitting across from us in the park.
We also stopped into the Strand and Meg of course was able to find a few books :) About the only thing that would make me ever want to get a Kindel or other ebook reader is that ebooks don’t pile up in our appt.

I also made my Christmas chocolate peanut butter fudge yesterday. We have a holiday party at work tomorrow so that was my contribution. This was a Christmas treat weekend I guess since Friday I made a few batches of Rum Balls that will be part of my Christmas gifts for people. Everything seemed to come out good, now the trick is just not eating it all before I can give them out.

No real plans for today. Got to do the usual shopping and laundry. Next weekend we may go and do Old Bethpage Village, they do candle light tours in the winter for the holidays. May try and drag Chelsea and Brett along with us if they are free.

Speaking of laundry I should go get stuff together.

Happy Thanksgiving 2009

Its way too early on Thanksgiving day. Am up mostly from a combination of the kitten causing trouble and just being so used to getting up this early. It’s all good though, I figure after stuffing my self with food later I will be up for a mid afternoon nap.

CT is good. The kitten is having fun running around a new place, we are mostly keeping him locked in the computer room where he can watch the fish and try and eat the house plants. We did let him venture into the living room yesterday for a bit where he first just hissed at the dogs and then decided to actively chase after them. The dogs not knowing exactly what to make of him just ran away into the other room. Poor puppies! hehe. We have a mean kitty!

Tomorrow we will likely hit the Book Barn as we usually do the day after Thanksgiving and are seriously thinking of braving the mall at some point so we can hit the Apple Store for a possible laptop purchase! Have to see what the sales they have are. Tomorrow night we are going to go to a Wolfpack Hockey game which is always fun too!

Monthly update

So yeah it’s been like a month since I have posted. Just been lazy, and tend to tweet since it’s easier and 140 characters requires less work. Nothing too exciting been going on. We have settled back into our “normal” lives here in NYC. Kitten is doing well. He’s not TOO much a terror, though he does have his moments.

I have today off, we had though about going into the city but Meg woke up feeling under the weather so we are just hanging around here for now. Maybe will run out some place later if shes feeling better.

It’s insane the holidays are almost upon us again. I think we may try some handmade type xmass stuff for people this year. We have a few different ideas and are starting to work on some projects. Whatever we do I think like with everyone else, Christmas will be a bit more low key this year, no one has the extra money to blow on gifts.

Thats about all I can think of for now. Meg has taken about a million kitten pictures and we did get wedding pictures on CD rom but both our computers have been acting up lately (may be time to replace them soon) so I have been lazy about going though them and uploading more.

A wedding and related events

It’s official. Meg and I are married!

We flew down to Fl on Tuesday the 6th . Funnily enough we were on the same flight as my parents, who were coming down early to stretch the wedding weekend into a vacation week for them. Because her mom had a job interview that afternoon we got picked up by her grandparents and after a quick stop at their house to drop off our bags and freshen up we ran down to the city clerks office and got our marriage license.

We spent the rest of the week doing random last minute errands and wedding preparations. Wednesday afternoon my parents came up from where they were staying and did lunch with us and Meg’s mom and grandparents. It was the first time our families met and everything went great.

Friday morning we got a ride into St. Augustine early and met up with my parents, brother, sister, and sister’s boyfriend to visit the St. Augustine Alligator farm. The place was really cool and had a large number of alligators, as one would imagine. It’s pretty impressive to look down a 6 foot fence and see a 15 foot long alligator sunning it self there on the ground. The swamp boardwalk was also really cool, getting to see all the alligators there in the water. Plus they had little quarter machines that dispensed alligator kibble for us to feed them with. I would have preferred a dead chicken vending machine but oh well. After the alligator farm, me, Meg and my parents met up with her dad, step mom, sister, and brother-in-law, for a nice lunch. Once lunch was finished we got a ride from my parents to our B&B ( At Journeys End ) in St. Augustine. We met with the woman who ran the place, and who was incredibly nice and helpful. She had a great tourist map of the area with restaurants either circled or Xed out. The room was REALLY nice, and after getting settled we sat outside on our second story porch and just enjoyed the few minutes of quiet we were able to get.

After relaxing, Meg was able to get in touch with her old friend Sarah who was driving down with her GF Jen. We met up with them at the visitors center and took them to the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! Museum. Meg and I have been before but this was Sarah and Jens first time. We had a blast, that place is always a trip. After we got some food and stopped at a few places to enjoy some sangria and other alcohol type beverages.

Saturday morning. The big day! We got up and had breakfast there at the B&B. Everything was really good, though we ate light, not wanting to over do it before the wedding. Then I got shuttled to Meg’s moms hotel and her mom and grandmother went over to the B&B to help Meg get into her dress and do her hair and all that. The weather at the Fountain of Youth was nice, though really hot for late October, even in Fl. People started arriving and I got to somewhat play host, while we waited for Meg to arrive. We had arranged for a horse and carriage to pick her up at the B&B and bring her to the wedding location.

She really looked quite stunning in her dress when I finally got see it and her. The ceremony was only about 15 minutes which was good because even with a slight breeze it was still hot standing there. Worse for Meg in that dress though, at least I only and on khaki pants and a light linen shirt. After we said our “I Do’s” and exchanged rings we got on the carriage, and after pausing for a few pictures, headed down to A1A Ale works where we had our reception. The carriage ride was nice, we got a lot of honks and waves. There was also a bottle of champagne waiting for us in the carriage which was a welcome treat in that heat.

The reception was nice. The room was really nicely decorated and the food was excellent. We really lucked out given I had basically booked everything over the internet. We all enjoyed our food and cake. Plus there was a champagne toast with one…memorable…toast from the brides mother.

Once the reception was over we all went back to the Fountain of Youth site (we had rented a trolley to shuttle people back and forth ). People were mostly on their own for the rest of the afternoon. The original plan had been for everyone to meet up to do one of the St. Augustine ghost tours but that ended up not quite working out for a number of reasons so Meg and I ended up hanging out with my brother, sister, and her boy friend Brett, with Sarah, Jenn, and Doug and Jeff (other friends of the family along with our photographers) for a few more drink around town.

Sunday we had another nice breakfast and ended up being picked up by Meg’s dad so we could spend the day at his rented condo on the beach. For the first time in like forever I got to do some swimming on a Florida visit. The tide was coming in and the rip currents were REALLY strong. But I had fun none the less. Also I got to see some schools of fish in the waves and even a sea turtle!

We spent the night there at her dads (I got WAY too much sun) and then went back to Meg’s moms house Monday morning where we mostly just took it easy and started packing up for our trip home on Tuesday.

We were finally home but not for long. Wednesday night Brett picked us up and brought us out to their house so I could pick up our car. My sister had decorated the back window with ‘Just Married 10-10-09′ and had one of the bows we had decorating the trolley attached to the front of the car, along with a bunch of streamers and balloons.

Thursday we drove up to CT and made our usual visit to the Book Barn and then went up to my parent’s house. See few weeks back a neighbor had found a kitten and to make a long story short our neighbor was taking care of it till she could find it a home and WE had a home so we got to meet the kitten (now named Hawkeye by Meg) and said we would definitely take him back with us to NY. The rest of the weekend was a mix of some nice fall time activities (apple picking and a visit to the Yankee Candle superstore) and picking up stuff for the kitty.

We finally drove back up Sunday morning and started unpacking and getting the kitten used to his new home. He was a bit skittish at first, he spent a lot of time hiding under the futon, but got better after a few hours and realizing that neither of us were going to eat him. Him and Meg are spending quality time together today, and she said he is exploring more of the appt. and has eaten some and used his litter box which is really good thing after the…incident we had last night on the blanket.

So that in a nutshell was our wedding and related activities. We have some pictures up on flickr which you can find a link to off of www.meganandandrew.org and are waiting on the disks of professional photos which could come later this week some time.

Right now it’s good just to be home and able to finally relax. Not that the wedding wasn’t fun or anything, but for the first time in a lone while we don’t have any major events pending or have to stress out about where to book a reception or something.

Wedding time

Were leaving for Florida in less than 12 hours at this point. Everything is pretty much all set for the wedding. We have a few days in Fl to finish up some last minute details, little things like the wedding license and Meg’s final dress fitting. You know nothing important.

The big event it self is Saturday morning 11:30am! We can’t wait. Both to be marred and to have all the wedding dramas over with :) No idea what we are doing the rest of the time in FL after the wedding. My family is leaving Sunday morning/afternoon but I don’t really know what everyone elses plans are. *I* would like to visit the Kennedy Space Center and maybe the Zoo in Jacksonville but we will have to see what the transportation situation is like.

I also have to give another big THANK YOU to my co-workers at the lab. Friday they got me (and meg in theory) a cake and wedding card with a nice extra gift inside. Thanks everyone!!! (Not that you can see this from work since for some odd reason captainscience.com is blocked….how odd ;) )

I’m not dead yet!

So this morning I got a call from Meg who sounded quite upset. It seems while she was on her morning walk/jog she tripped on the curb and her I-pod went flying and fell down the sewer grate. Needless to say she was very upset but un-injured at least. Well once I got home we mounted an expedition to the curb and sewer grate. Looking down I was able to see it laying on top of some leaves. I put on some gloves and used a long metal grabber and after a few tries we able to catch the edge of the I-Pod and amazingly lift it back up though the grate. Yay…day saved and all that.

The best part was while I was there laying on the sidewalk with my arm stuck down though the opening of the grate trying to snag the I-Pod some 10 year old’s came out of the little corner store and I herd them asking Meg “Is he dead”. Meg calmly explained what I was doing just as I was able to bring the I-Pod back to the surface and show them that I was in fact NOT dead.

Sagamore Hill

Seeing as today was such a nice day Meg and I decided to take a trip out to Sagamore Hill on Long Island. Sagamore Hill was home to Theodore Roosevelt and his family and was known as “The Summer White House”. The drive out there was nice, made even more so by using the shiny new GPS that Jenn and David got us as an early wedding present. We got to tour the grounds (and saw some wild turkeys) and then do a guided tour of the house. We really had perfect weather for the day and brought sandwiches so we could have a picnic lunch there on the grounds. We originally had though about doing some exploring of the area around Sagamore Hill, like Oyster Bay and what not, but Meg’s allergies were sort of making her head explode so decided to pass on that for this trip, but plan to go back again some time soon.

Mmm…beer…bread

Just got thought with dinner. Ended up making soup tonight and tried a new beer bread recipe which came out really good. (Due to a little mis-communication we ended up with too much beer last weekend for the BBQ in Hartford so we took home the extra hence my desire to find alternate uses for all the beer :) ) The only problem is that I am going to have a LOT of left over soup and bread. I am not used to cooking for 1 any more and with Meg still in Fl looks like I will be eating soup for a day or two.

Didn’t do much exciting today. Tore the bedroom apart to clean it. The sad thing is it doesn’t look THAT different. Most of the cleaning was corralling the dust bunnies llamas that were under the dresser and behind the bed. I think I got black lung disease in the process but the room is mostly dust free now. The trick is going to be trying to keep it that way.

Back to work tomorrow. Though given I will have the room to my self some how I don’t think it will be too bad of a Monday!

Weekend update

First off, an update on the case of the mysterious memory card. On Wednesday afternoon I got a call from someone at Radio City Music Hall. He said that they got my letter and photos and know who the card belongs to. They talked to her and she asks if I could mail it to here there at Radio City. I told them it was no problem and sent it out in the mail on Friday. Score one for my internet geekry/forensic science training!

The rest of this week has been quiet. Meg flew down to Florida on Wednesday to do some wedding prep stuff with her mom, leaving me alone in the apartment. I wish I could say I have been throwing wild parties every night but I still have to go to that pesky thing called a job. The height of excitement is going to be tonight when I can have some nachos and watch a few zombie movies I have been wanting to see (28 weeks later!). Meg is not so much a fan of the zombie genre so it’s a good time to get my living-dead on!

Meg is due back Wednesday, gets in some time in the evening so I will be able to pick her up at the airport. Oddly enough work is going to be just about as quiet at home. Everyone in my room is going to be down in FL them selves for a training class leaving me to tend the fire debris fort all by my self. Let’s just hope the city doesn’t get hit by a serial arsonist this weekend! Hehe.

Wedding is in less then a month now!
